Types of Chiropractic Adjusting

Dr. May offers several different Chiropractic adjusting options. For all new and existing patients, please don't hesitate to ask for a

demonstration of available adjusting techniques. All of the different techniques can be equally effective but keep in mind that some techniques tend to produce results faster than others.

Being comfortable with a Chiropractic adjusting technique is much more important than the speed of results in most cases, as back and neck pain and tenderness may necessitate using a more gentle technique and some patients simply do not care for the manual adjusting "popping" and "cracking" that is synonymous with Chiropractic care. Available Chiropractic adjusting types and a short explanation are listed below.

Manual (Diversified) Adjusting - This Chiropractic adjusting technique manually restores motion to spinal joints that have lost normal range of motion and at times produces a "popping" or "cracking" sound that is simply a release of gas pressure from the spinal disk. This is the same "popping" and "cracking" that is normally experienced at times during body movement. This technique has been proven safe during numerous research studies.

Gentle Spinal Joint Mobilization - Gentle Mobilization is a hands-on manual adjusting technique that is not concerned with producing an audible "crack" or "pop" but is simply administered with a gentle rhythmic movement at the affected spinal joint. This technique is commonly accompanied with spinal soft tissue massage.

Flexion - Distraction - Flexion-Distraction technique uses a special chiropractic table that makes circular and vertical movements to release disc and spinal pressures. The movement, guided by the hands of a chiropractic physician, creates a suction effect to allow a disc to return to its normal height or a joint to its normal range of motion. It has been proven effective for the treatment of disc bulges/herniations, sciatica / leg pain, spinal stenosis, and spinal spondylolisthesis. During treatment, the patient will feel low back stretching that will provide significant pain relief.

Activator Instrument Adjusting - The activator adjusting instrument produces a gentle tap to the tendon connected to the spinal vertebra which has lost range of motion. The effect is similar to the well known knee reflex that occurs when the patella knee tendon is tapped with a reflex hammer which then produces the characteristic low leg movement. This is the most gentle technique and is effective but usually will require more visits than some of the other techniques.
